The Naga Hospital Kohima (District Hospital Kohima) was approved by the MOHFW,
Government of India for upgradation to new Medical College with a total layout of Rs. 189.00 crores
on a funding pattern of 90:10 between Central and State governments vide DO letter No: U.
12012/46/2012- ME (p-II) Dated 19th Feb 2014.
It will be the first ever medical college in the 55 years of Statehood to Nagaland and will be
called as Nagaland Medical College Kohima (NMCK). The State Government is committed to start the
Medical College by 2021. The upcoming NMCK will function from two campuses- Administrative,
Academic, 100 Bedded Hospital for departments relating to Mother & Child services, Hostel complex
for students and Residential complex of Faculty & Staff at Phriebagie while Teaching Hospital for the
remaining disciplines will be at NHK (District Hospital Kohima) for initial 3 years and later the existing
building with capacity of 100 bedded will be used for Maternal & Child Hospital, which will be linked
with proposed 400 bedded teaching hospital in conformity with MCI norms to use as combined 500
bedded Teaching Hospital of the Medical College.
Due to incessant rain in the recent years, the Stability of Land in and around NHK campus has
been exacerbated particularly last year affecting the structure of the hospital building in many places.
Many areas has been rendered unstable and therefore availability of suitable land for expansion hospital
has become limited. As a result, it has become unviable for any major expansion and therefore, a new
building has to construct at a new site.
